Welcome to EARLY YEARS FOUNDATION STAGE


At Whinstone, the EYFS forms the underpinning and overarching framework for learning and development for all children in our care. We intend to enable our children to learn holistically through a combination of access to quality first teaching and through play, experimentation, and exploration while making friends, developing social skills and cultural capital. We aim to ensure that every child has an excellent start to school life, achieving and making progress across each aspect of the EYFS Profile.

Curriculum Areas

The seven areas of learning and development that comprise the Early Years Foundation Stage are:

Personal, social and emotional development (PSED)

English:

Literacy development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters in order to begin to read and write. We systematically follow the Read Write Inc phonics programme to teach the development of reading and spelling skills. Our approach is tailored to individual need and is fast-paced allowing excellent progress in the development of reading fluency and writing skills.

We develop a love of books and reading within our setting and foster a literature rich learning environment to ignite children’s interest and love of books and reading. The children engage in a wide-range of reading and writing activities during their days in school.

Teachers assess individual children’s progress and ensure that they are given appropriate activities and resources to match their needs.

Maths:

Mathematics involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, space and measures.

Children enjoy exploring Mathematics through play and they develop language skills at the same time. Teachers set up both teacher-led activities and opportunities for the children to initiate their own learning.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development:

Personal, social and emotional development involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others and to form positive relationships. Our care of children at Whinstone promotes good relationships between children, teachers and parents. Children in both Pre-school and Reception develop respect for others; they develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

Physical Development:

Physical Development Physical development involves providing opportunities for our children to be active and interactive; and to develop their coordination, control and movement. Children are also helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to make healthy choices in relation to food. Pre-school have specific hall based P.E lessons each Wednesday and Reception each Friday. We also have continuous provision accessing both indoor and outdoor areas, developing both gross and fine motor skills.

Communication and Language Development:

Communication and Language Development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language within a thriving environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to speak and listen in a range of situations. Mrs Artley teaches sign language through song and children are introduced to basic French over the summer term.

Expressive Art and Design:

Expressive Art and Design involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in Art, Music, Movement, Dance, Role-play, and Design and Technology.

In addition to class-based activities, Reception also have access to music specialists from Tees Valley Music and are taught music during the summer term by Miss Ambrosini – our school based music curriculum leader.

Understanding of the world:

Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment. As part of their learning in this area, children access technology through continuous provision and Reception children access the computer suite or iPads once a week.  The classroom, outdoor learning environment and our Mud Kitchen provide wonderful opportunities for exploration and discovery. We also focus on developing opportunities and experiences for all ensuring that we embrace and develop cultural capital.
